ABSTRACT

Few studies exist on the reading habits of the deaf population, and most of those that do were published more than 20 years ago. Hence, changes in reading habits due to the availability to the deaf population of online reading material and portable electronic devices have likely occurred. Additionally, in the hearing population, confinement causes changes in reading habits. We used an online questionnaire to compare the reading habits of 102 deaf and hard of hearing adult residents of Spain both before and during COVID-19 confinement. In general, more reading occurred during confinement, although not all participants showed this pattern: Regular readers read more during lockdown. Motivations for reading were largely unaffected by confinement. Furthermore, the time spent reading was not related to the availability of books at home: More was read in digital format during confinement.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: A 7-month-old boy presented with generalized urticaria since the first week of life, without any other clinical manifestation. Cow's milk allergy was ruled out. His development was normal for his age. Maternal history was significant for COVID-19 infection in the third trimester of pregnancy with mild symptoms. Family history was significant for dermatographism in a maternal uncle. Hives were migratory with no single lesion persisting more than 24 h. There were no recognizable triggers and only relieved for 1-2 days after each vaccination. Patient was treated with optimal doses of antihistamines without improvement. Method(s): Laboratory tests and further studies were performed Results: Laboratory tests were normal including complete blood testing, circulating autoantibodies and infectious studies. C-reactive protein level and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were elevated. Due to chronic urticaria of newborn onset unresponsive to antihistamines a monogenic autoinflammatory disease was suspected. A targeted gene panel covering causative genes revealed the unreported p.Gly307Ala variant in the NLRP3 gene with a variant allele frequency (VAF) of 3% compatible with gene mosaicism. NLRP3 variant was classified as "likely pathogenic" based on its location, where a different variant has been reported as causing a severe form of cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS), and bioinformatic analyses. As expected, the variant was absent in patient's parents supporting for its de novo nature. Vision and hearing exams were normal. Treatment with canakinumab will start soon. Discussion(s): CAPS are dominantly-inherited autoinflammatory diseases caused by gain-of-function NLRP3 variants. These variants are often germline, but in some reported cases the variants are postzygotic causing gene mosaicism as in the patient here described. We believe that the mild presentation in our patient, despite having a likely pathogenic variant, may be explained by the low VAF. The genetic diagnosis in our patient allowed early initiation of anti-IL-1 treatment, which probably will prevent the development of other CAPS manifestations.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID 19 pandemic in Peru, the digitalization process of criminal public hearings increased, initiated in previous years by the introduction of ICTs in the work of legal institutions and professionals. This situation has given rise to debates on the application of the principle of immediacy, which traditionally governs criminal proceedings. The present work has the objective of analyzing the influence of digitalization on the principle of immediacy in criminal public hearings, held in Peru during the COVID 19 pandemic. To achieve this objective, a qualitative design study, descriptive and the use of theoretical level methods, to explain the use of ICTs and the digitization process, the general principles of law, with an emphasis on im-mediacy, and digitization in criminal public hearings. As a result, it is concluded that legislation and jurisprudence agree that the digitalization of public criminal hearings does not violate the principle of immediacy, but rather facilitates the interrelation of the parties, and the judge's appreciation of objective and subjective elements that guarantee his conviction. to dictate a fair and well-founded sentence in matters of facts and law. © 2023, University of Cienfuegos, Carlos Rafael Rodriguez. ABSTRACT

Interaction with the world around us requires extracting meaningful signals to guide behaviour. The mammalian senses of olfaction, vision, somatosensation, hearing, balance and taste facilitate extraction of sense-specific information. Most sensory organs in the vertebrate head originate from cranial placodes (CPs). CPs are formed embryonically through a series of differentiation steps arising at the boundary between neural and non-neural ectoderm, and they can be divided into anterior, posterior and intermediate groups depending on their place of origin in the developing embryonic head. Anterior CPs include adenohypophyseal, olfactory and lens placodes;intermediate CPs include the trigeminal placode, which gives rise to the sensory neurons of the ophthalmic and maxilla-mandibular divisions of the trigeminal ganglion;posterior CPs are comprised of the otic, lateral line placode and the epibranchial placodes that give rise to the inner ear, lateral line organs (in fish and amphibian) and sensory neurons of the geniculate, petrosal and nodose ganglia, respectively. The complexity of neural plate border specification in vitro poses a major limitation to gain deeper mechanistic insights into the developmental cues driving efficient placodal differentiation;hence generation and establishment of in vitro cellular models with improved cranial placode differentiation are challenging. Our group is interested in the establishment of cranial/sensory placodes in vitro using novel cellular stress stem cell reprogramming models with translational implications in sensorineural hearing loss regeneration and modelling COVID-19-associated anosmia. We are primarily interested in building the otic placodes that can form viable otic vesicles in vitro, which can be further directed to generate cochlear/vestibular systems of inner ear and the sensory neurons of its associated vestibulocochlear ganglion. Given the copious involvement of serine proteases in COVID-19 pathogenesis, we are also encouraged to leverage our proteolytic stress cellular models towards establishment and characterization of novel olfactory epithelial neurospheres housing supporting cells, progenitor cells and sensory neurons for investigating cellular and molecular targets of COVID-19-associated anosmia. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2022.

ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, videoconferencing technology has been widely adopted as a convenient, powerful, and fundamental tool that has simplified many day-to-day tasks. However, video communication is dependent on audible conversation and can be strenuous for those who are Hard of Hearing. Communication methods used by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community differ significantly from those used by the hearing community, and a distinct language gap is evident in workspaces that accommodate workers from both groups. Therefore, we integrated users in both groups to explore ways to alleviate obstacles in mixed-group videoconferencing by implementing user-generated icons. A participatory design methodology was employed to investigate how the users overcome language differences. We observed that individuals utilized icons within video-mediated meetings as a universal language to reinforce comprehension. Herein, we present design implications from these findings, along with recommendations for future icon systems to enhance and support mixed-group conversations. © 2023 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is complex multisystem disease. After 4 weeks of persistent symptoms, it is termed as Long COVID-19. Long COVID-19 causes a decrease in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In this study, it was aimed to determine which symptoms were associated with lower HRQoL in Long COVID-19 in this study. Material(s) and Method(s): This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary research hospital. Patients who have positive RT-PCR results at least 28 days and at most 180 days ago were selected for the study. Online survey was applied to 266 patients who had positive PCR test results for COVID-19. The EuroQoL 5D-3L scale was used to measure the HRQoL as a dependent variable. Socio-demographic features and symptoms were assessed by the survey as independent variables. Due to heteroscedasticity, a robust standard error regression analysis was conducted to make inferences on the effects of persistent symptoms on HRQoL. Result(s): Of the total 266 participants, 163 were females (63.3%). The mean age was 41.2 +/- 11.8 years. One hundred forty-two patients (53.3%) did not report any ongoing symptom. Female gender and lower education level as socio-demographic variables, visual problems and myalgia as persistent symptoms were identified as risk factors for reduced HRQoL in Long COVID-19 patients. Discussion(s): Long COVID-19 patients experience lower levels of HRQoL, especially those with visual problems and/or myalgia. Interventions to raise the HRQoL of Long COVID-19 patients should first target visual problems and myalgia.Copyright © 2023, Derman Medical Publishing. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Currently, numerous studies around the world are performed to investigate possible com-plications of COVID-19. Audiovestibular system damage can be a manifestation of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Various viruses are known to cause congenital hearing impairment. Are neonates of SARS-CoV-2 positive mothers in a risk group of congenital hearing loss? Review of literature is not conclusive, but there is more evidence for COVID-19 not being a risk factor for congenital hearing loss. Limited cohort studies, using newborn hearing screening, were performed to compare the incidence of neonatal hearing loss with newborns with no potential risk factors. More studies are needed to support these results and regular checkups of newborns in a risk of hearing impairment due to maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection to inves-tigate possible complications.

It is no exception that it has altered the way international arbitration is conducted-more elements of a typical arbitration that were based on physical presence now occur remotely. Such a new mode of practicing will speed up processes and thus favor efficiency. ABSTRACT

Background: Telemedicine is a method of providing remote healthcare services and consultations to patients using communication technology. Tele-audiology is a sub-branch of telemedicine. It refers to providing audiology services using telehealth strategies. This study aims to compare the satisfaction of patients who come to the hearing aid center and receive device fitting service and patients who have hearing aid fitting using tele-audiology service. For this purpose, hearing aid users were divided into two groups. The study group consisted of 17 participants (10 male, 7 females;mean age 65.17 +/- 13.88) who continued fitting appointments remotely after the first clinic application, while the control group consisted of 23 participants (10 males, 13 females;mean age 62.17 +/- 18.32) who had all hearing aid fittings performed face-to-face in the clinic. The participant's satisfaction was assessed with The International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids Turkiye (IOI-HA-TR) questionnaire because it is practical and can be administered over the phone. Result(s): There were no significant differences in hearing aid satisfaction between those who came to the hearing center and filled out the IOI-HA-TR questionnaire personally and those who completed it through the Remote Care application (p < 0.05). In addition, most of the participants stated that using Remote Care solved their problems (35% very good, 24% good) and they were satisfied with the fitting of their hearing aids with this application (35% good, 29% very good). In addition, 13 out of 17 participants stated that they would pay attention to the "remote fitting" feature when purchasing a new hearing aid (76% very good). Moreover, they would like to continue the fitting using the Remote Care application (65% yes). Conclusion(s): Remote fitting technology via smartphone applications can facilitate the lives of hearing aid users and improve their quality of life in cases of risky conditions such as pandemics, various diseases, and physical limitations.Copyright © 2023, The Author(s).

Bu araştırma, Diyanet Íşleri Başkanlığı bünyesinde görev yapan din görevlilerinin Covid-19 (Koronavirüs) salgın sürecinde işitme engelli bireylere sunmuş oldukları din eğitimi ve uzaktan eğitim hakkındaki görüşleri ile teknolojik araç-gereçleri kullanma yeterliklerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma nicel araştırma yönteminin tercih edildiği betimsel bir çalışmadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak açık uçlu ve çoktan seçmeli soruları içeren anket kullanılmıştır. Anket, 2019-2020 öğretim yılı bahar yarıyılında işitme engellilere uzaktan din eğitimi veren din görevlileri evreninde kasti örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenmiş 38 din görevlisine uygulanmıştır. Anket formlarından elde edilen verilerin istatistiksel analizi Google Forms ve Microsoft Excel programı ile yapılmıştır. Öğreticilerin farklı illerde yaşıyor olmaları ve Covid-19 salgını, uygulamanın uzaktan yapılmasını zorunlu kılmıştır. The research is a descriptive study that prefer the quantitative method. In the research findings obtained through a survey contains both open ended and multiple-choice questions. The survey was applied to 38 religious officials that chosen by deliberate sampling method from the Presidency of Religious Affairs' instructors universe that were educating people with hearing impaired in the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. Statistical analysis of the datas obtained from survey were done via Google Forms and Microsoft Excel. Due to the facts that the instructors are living in different cities and Covid-19 pandemic made it obligatory to implement the research distance. The determination have been done according to the research findings are: the religious education offered to the hearing impaired has continued for 8 years in a systematic way, the experience of the instructors are insufficient about distance education, before the epidemic the youngs with hearing impaired didn't attend Qur'an courses sufficiently, during the epidemic the adults with hearing impaired didn't show much interest in distance learning due to the reasons;lack of communication, family support, technological impossibilities, prejudice about failure in distance education and inadequate course hours. ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the frequency of ear, nose and throat related disorders of covid disease in PCR proven positive Covid-19 patients. Method(s): This prospective study included 320 Covid-19 positive patients and was conducted at ENT Department of MTI Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar from May 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022. The acute phase of covid-19 was taken as the time interval between the onsets of symptoms as day 1 today 30th post infection. Questions were asked about the following symptoms;flu, sore throat, sinus involvement, taste disturbances, smell disturbances, hoarseness and hearing loss. Clinical examination and relevant investigations were carried out to make a diagnosis. The data was documented on a proforma & analyzed using SPSS 26.0 for windows to determine the frequencies of signs & symptoms related to ENT. Result(s): A total of 320 patients were included in the study. The ages ranged from 18-50 years with mean age of 33.96 years. The age group 18-25 years mostly presented with symptoms related to ENT. Upper respiratory tract infection was the commonest symptom (60.6%) followed by sore throat (57.5%). Smell and taste disturbances accounted for in 46.3% & 15.3 % of the patients respectively. Fungal rhinosinusitis was observed in 6.9% of the patients. As there is a wide variation of the ENT symptoms in covid disease, it is important to know the predictive symptoms so that appropriate measures can be adopted. Identification & isolation of patients will prevent spread of disease and focused therapy and investigations. Practical implication Conclusion(s): The portal of entry for the SARS-CoV-2 is through the upper airway. It is important to know the symptoms related to ENT to make an early diagnosis and therefore, institute measures for management and prevention of further spread of the disease.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought enormous challenges to law enforcement officials, in the sense of developing solutions for maintaining procedural progress. Although a large part of the judicial processes were already being processed in electronic format, some acts were still carried out in person, such as hearings. The National Council of Justice instituted hearings by videoconference. However, case analysis suggests the need to improve these audiences. The purpose of this article is, through the empirical analysis of some cases reported in the media, to analyze the compatibility of the instructional and trial hearings with the due constitutional process. © 2022, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. ABSTRACT

Aim: In this study, we aimed to assess the frequency of patient emergency visits to the Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Department during coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and compare it with that before coronavirus COVID-19. Material(s) and Method(s): A retrospective comparative study was performed at Al-Al-Hada Armed Forces Hospital, Taif (Saudi Arabia), and data regarding various diagnoses of ORL cases were collected from medical records of patients who visited/admitted to ORL-ED during the lockdown (Group 1) and those who visited/ admitted to ORL-ED before the pandemic (Group 2). Result(s): Group 2 had a significantly higher percentage of cases who had no ENT-related disorders, hypertrophy inferior turbinate (HIT), stridor, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), epistaxis and who had no complications, had general ENT, foreign body ingestion-aspiration, trauma, otology and who had more than one disorder and Group 1 had a significantly higher percentage of those having nasal obstruction, tonsil hypertrophy grade 3, had emergency head and neck cancer, had deep neck space infections and who had complicated. Discussion(s): During coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic period, cold ENT visits were much less and foreign body ingestion remains the highest reason for ENT visits. Additionally, telemedicine has been shown to be effective in reducing ED visits during the pandemic period. Furthermore, older cases with chronic ENT problems who had regular follow-up ENT visits were less likely to visit ED during the pandemic.Copyright © 2022, Derman Medical Publishing. When high quality photographs of the faces of 2700 middle aged and older participants in a longitudinal study were assessed by a panel without knowledge of their chronological age and medical history, people whose perceived age was lower than their chronological age were less likely to have osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hearing loss, or cataracts. Energy expenditure and incident type 2 diabetes Data from 90 000 participants in the UK Biobank study who wore an accelerometer for seven days reveal a linear relation between the amount of energy expended during physical activity and the subsequent incidence of type 2 diabetes—even after adjusting for body mass index. A study using data for 1.5 million prescriptions of PPIs in UK general practice found an increased risk of diagnosis of an inflammatory bowel disease in the first two years after treatment started.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Age-related hearing loss has potential effects on communication, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of the older person's life. Evaluating the role of hearing aids in reducing these difficulties is important. This study aimed to evaluate communication difficulties, self-perceived handicaps, and depression in hearing-impaired older adults who are either hearing aid users or non-users. METHODS: A total of 114 older adults in the age range of 55-85 years with moderate to moderately severe hearing loss (two hearing-matched groups; hearing aid users: n = 57; hearing aid non-users: n = 57) took part in this study during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-perceived hearing handicaps and communication were evaluated using the Hearing Handicap Inventory in the Elderly-Screening (HHIE-S) and Self-Assessment Communication (SAC) questionnaires. Depression was assessed using the geriatric depression scale (GDS). RESULTS: The average score of HHIE-S was significantly higher in the hearing aid users than the non-users (16.61 ± 10.39 vs. 12.49 ± 9.84; p = 0.01). Differences between groups were not significant for SAC or GDS scores (p ≥ 0.05). There were strong positive correlations between HHIE-S and SAC scores in both groups. Moderate correlations were found between SAC and GDS scores in the hearing aid users and between the duration of using hearing aid with SAC and HHIE-S scores. CONCLUSION: It seems that self-perceived handicaps, communication difficulties and depression are affected by many factors, and only receiving hearing aids without subsequent support such as auditory rehabilitation and programming services cannot bring the expected output. The effect of these factors was clearly observed due to reduced access to services in the COVID-19 era.

OBJECTIVE: To gain medical insight into the clinical course and safety of otolaryngologic disorders following immunisation with severe acute respiratory coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA-based vaccines. DESIGN: Case description. STUDY SAMPLE: We report four cases of transient audio-vestibular symptoms, which occurred shortly after inoculation of two BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech®) and mRNA-1273 (Moderna®) vaccines. RESULTS: Hearing loss was unilateral in all cases and recovered at least partially: it was associated with persistent gait instability in two cases, after 1 and 7 months. Trigger mechanisms underpinning audio-vestibular impairment remain uncertain. Immune tolerance mechanisms with off-target innate activation of T-lymphocytes may be involved in vestibulocochlear nerve disorders, as for other cranial nerves involvement. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of audio-vestibular manifestations following mRNA-based vaccines needs ENT monitoring to support their causality in such rare vaccine-related adverse events. Audio-vestibular disorders appeared of transitory nature, including hearing loss, and should not deter further efforts in large-scale vaccination campaigns against SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the impact of Coronavirus-2019 on individuals without housing and experiencing psychosis using semi-structured qualitative interviews and a case study format. We found that for our participants, life in the pandemic was generally more difficult and filled with violence. Further, the pandemic seemed to impact the content of psychosis directly, such that in some cases voices referred to politics around the virus. Being unhoused during the pandemic may increase the sense of powerlessness, social defeat, and the sense of failure in social interactions. Despite national and local measures to mitigate virus spread in unhoused communities, the pandemic seemed to be particularly hard on those who were unhoused. This research should support our efforts to see access to secure housing as a human rights issue.

Introduction: Pediatric sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare otological emergency. With the emergence of the Coronavirus 19 pandemic, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are among the essential household items. Many hand sanitizers are frequently coupled with scents that young children may find pleasant. Case Report: A 5-year-old girl presented to our clinic with hearing loss after the consumption of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. A pure tone audiogram showed bilateral SSNHL. The child was prescribed systemic corticosteroids resulted in a slight improvement in hearing thresholds. The child was followed up at 6 and 18 months showing no further improvement in hearing thresholds. Conclusion: Although various infective, vascular, and immune responses have been proposed, alcohol-based hand sanitizer consumption has not been reported to present with SSNHL to the best of our knowledge. In the current scenario of the Coronavirus pandemic, otorhinolaryngologists must keep in mind that SSNHL may occur as a result of hazardous alcohol-based hand disinfectant consumption.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychosocial health among individuals with different levels of hearing ability. DESIGN: For this cross-sectional study, adults completed an online digits-in-noise test and survey. Participants were categorised into "good", "insufficient", or "poor" hearing groups. Survey questions included topics on depression, anxiety, distress, somatisation, and loneliness levels. Multiple logistic, linear, and negative binomial regressions examined differences in psychosocial health between hearing groups. Moderation analyses identified vulnerable subgroups. Mediation analyses examined mediating effects of pandemic measures on hearing ability and psychosocial health. STUDY SAMPLE: Eight-hundred and sixty-five adults with or without hearing impairment. RESULTS: Individuals with poor hearing had a higher odds of having elevated anxiety levels and had higher somatisation levels compared to participants with good hearing. Chronic diseases significantly moderated the relationship between poor hearing ability and loneliness. Difficulties with communicating through facemasks, 1.5 m distance, plastic screens, and during video calls significantly mediated the relationships between hearing ability, anxiety and somatisation. CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the elevated anxiety and somatisation levels experienced among individuals with hearing impairment during the COVID-19 pandemic. More awareness is needed of the negative impact pandemic measures can have on psychosocial health during future health crises.
